Hawaiʻi ranks as 7th most dangerous US state for motorcycle riders

A research team from Big Auto Accident Attorneys analyzed 2023 motorcycle safety data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and found that Hawaiʻi ranks as the 7th most dangerous state in the country for motorcycle riders. “Hawaiʻi’s No. 7 ranking is particularly surprising given the state’s small size and island geography,” said Nic Edgson.

 

Bird flu survey finds most flock owners unaware of best practices

A survey by the Hawaiʻi Department of Health finds that while most local residents are aware that the bird flu had been detected in Hawai‘i, roughly two-thirds of flock owners had been unaware of related best practices. In March 2025, the Health Department surveyed Hawaiʻi residents who keep backyard flocks or are involved in birds.

 

Fighting hunger: Food Drive Day launches Aug. 2

Hawaiʻi Foodbank will hold its largest fundraising event of the year, Food Drive Day, on Aug. 2. Members of the community are encouraged to make a donation to the campaign or hold their own food and fund drives to support local families amid shifting economic conditions and widespread funding cuts to food banks and safety.

 

Coastal flooding advisory issued

The National Weather Service has issued a minor coastal flooding statement for low-lying coastal areas of Maui County and the Big Island. Peak afternoon high tides combined with high water are expected to continue about half a foot higher than predicted through Friday. Aside from Maui and Hawaii Island, affected areas include low-lying coasts.

 

‘Plastic Free’ speaking event highlights Maui’s fight against marine debris

Dr. Jenn Lynch, co-director of Hawai‘i Pacific University’s Center for Marine Debris Research, will speak during a free “Plastic Free” event from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Monday at the Maui Ocean Center in Mā‘alaea. The event is part of the “Cultures and Coastlines Speaker Series.” Lynch’s talk is titled “Tides of Impact: Culture, Science.

 

Gas prices fall 5 cents per gallon in Kahului, according to weekly AAA Hawaiʻi Gas Watch

The average price for a gallon of unleaded gas in Kahului declined 5 cents from a week ago, now at $4.46, continuing to hold steady with low prices form last year, according to the weekly AAA Hawaiʻi Weekend Gas Watch. The Kahului gas price is 27 cents lower than a year ago. 

 

Schatz introduces legislation to help app-based workers

Hawai‘i Sen. Brian Schatz and Connecticut Sen. Chris Murphy, both Democrats, have introduced the “Empowering App-Based Workers Act,” new legislation to improve transparency on how app companies operate and help boost wages for rideshare drivers and delivery app workers. “Every day rideshare drivers and delivery app workers work long hours and travel many miles.

 

Midway Atoll receives translocated Laysan finches from Manawai after 80 years since rats erradicated them from Midway Atoll in the mid-1940s

After 80 years, Kuaihelani (Midway Atoll) is once again home to the endangered ʻekupuʻu (Laysan finch). On July 21 and 22, a team of U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service staff and partners released 100 birds at Kuaihelani on Eastern Island, making this the first time in eight decades that ʻekupuʻu graces the fields and skies of Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge and Battle of Midway Memorial.

Update: Council committee votes 6-3 to approve vacation rental phase-out bill

Members of the Maui County Council’s Housing and Land Use Committee voted 6-3 on Thursday to recommend passage of Bill 9 on first reading, reaching a milestone in a review process that saw more than 300 people testify for and against the bill over the course of five days this summer. The measure would phase-out.
