Maui lane closures for the week ending Aug. 21, 2026
The state Department of Transportation will be conducting road work this week that will result in lane closures at various locations. There will be no lane closures on Friday, Aug. 21 in observance of the Statehood Day holiday, unless permitted. Lane closure schedules may change at any time without further notice. All projects are weather permitting.

Closures of state camping, parks, lands and trails due to Lala
Maui forestry and wildlife lands were closed as of 5 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 14, 2026. Out of an abundance of caution for the safety of residents and visitors, the State Department of Land and Natural Resources had announced a list of closures of camping, parks, lands and trails.
Kahului man reported missing, public help sought
David Lewis, 38, of Kahului was reported missing by a concerned acquaintance on Friday, Aug. 14, 2026. He last spoke with his acquaintance via phone in February of 2026. Prior to this, Lewis had maintained regular monthly contact. It is further reported that he has not had any contact with several mutual friends or associates.

Lala Saturday Updates: Lala now a category 1 hurricane, Big Island bracing for impacts
Regularly scheduled Lala updates for Saturday, Aug. 15, 2026 are posted here. Hurricane conditions are expected on the Big Island of Hawaiʻi on Saturday, with tropical storm conditions expected in Maui County Saturday night.
State of Hawaiʻi takes action ahead of Lala impacts
Hawaiʻi state agencies are taking action and preparing resources in advance of Tropical Storm Lala as it approaches the state. Governor Josh Green has signed an emergency proclamation as Hawaiʻi state agencies mobilize personnel, equipment and other resources ahead of Tropical Storm Lala.

The Hawaiʻi Department of Health has confirmed a case of cyclosporiasis in a member of the military based in Hawaiʻi.
Maui Bus services to be altered Saturday due to Tropical Storm Lala
Due to Tropical Storm Lala, County of Maui Department of Transportation on Saturday, Aug. 15, 2026, will suspend or end early certain Maui Bus services. Transit services for Sunday will be determined by midday Saturday.
Update: Hawaiian Electric ends Public Safety Power Shutoff watch for Hawaiʻi Island
Hawaiian Electric is monitoring weather conditions across its service territory that may lead to an increased risk of wildfires, particularly in the Kawaihae area of Hawaiʻi Island. If needed to protect public safety, Hawaiian Electric may implement its Public Safety Power Shutoff program to proactively shut off power in communities with high exposure to wildfire risk. Customers in these areas are urged to initiate their own emergency plans and prepare for the possibility of extended power outages.
Darryl Oliveira hired as Acting Administrator of Hawaiʻi County Civil Defense
Darryl Oliveira served as interim Director for the Maui Emergency Management Agency in 2023 following the Maui Wildfires. He is now tapped to head the Hawaiʻi County Civil Defense Agency.
